Surgical Imaging Market - Emerging Industry Trends to Boost Revenue

Market Dynamics:

Advantages of FPDs over image intensifiers

The evolution of C-arms-from the traditional X-ray image intensifier technology to digital flat-panel detectors (FPDs)-has brought about significant advancements in diagnostic imaging. FPDs have a number of advantages over image intensifiers, such as compact size and reduced radiation dose. Although resolution varies from model to model, FPDs have the ability to produce a more consistent high-quality digital image.

While the quality of images generated from traditional image intensifiers deteriorates as the system ages, this is not the case with FPDs. They continue to deliver the same image quality even years after use and can provide a wider and more dynamic range of imaging compared to image intensifiers. Additionally, in case of image intensifiers, the field of vision is reduced with higher magnification; this does not happen if FPDs are used.

Expected Revenue Growth:

The overall surgical imaging market is expected to grow from USD 1.25 billion by 2017 to USD 1.63 billion in 2022, at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2017 to 2022.

By application, the orthopedic and trauma surgeries segment is expected to command the largest share of the market in 2017

On the basis of application, the market has been segmented into orthopedic and trauma surgeries, neurosurgeries, cardiovascular surgeries, gastrointestinal surgeries, and other applications (urology and endobronchial & thoracic surgery). The orthopedic and trauma surgeries segment is expected to command the largest share of the market in 2017. The large share and high growth of this segment can be attributed to factors such as increasing popularity of minimally invasive procedures in orthopedic and trauma surgeries and the advantage of 3D navigation with the use of C-arms.

By technology, the image intensifier C-arms segment is expected to account for the largest share of the market in 2017

On the basis of technology, the surgical imaging market is broadly segmented into image intensifier C-arms and flat panel detector C-arms (FPD C-arms). In 2017, image intensifier C-arms is expected to account for the largest share of this market owing to the huge installed base of these systems globally. Image intensifier C-arms are cheaper than FPD C-arms and hence are the preferred choice for many end users globally. Moreover, maintenance costs and services required for these C-arms are much cheaper which has made them a preferential choice.

Emerging markets to offer high growth opportunities

Emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil, Mexico, and several Middle Eastern countries are expected to witness high growth in the market. These markets are majorly untapped and are characterized by improving healthcare infrastructure, significant growth in the geriatric population, a growing middle-class, and rising income levels, which together are driving the demand for improved healthcare using advanced medical technologies. To leverage the growth opportunities in these markets, major players are focusing on expanding their presence in Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East.

For instance, in February 2015, Shimadzu Corporation (Japan) established Shimadzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd, an indirectly-owned subsidiary, which strengthened the company’s manufacturing, sales, and application support capabilities in the Indian subcontinents and ASEAN region. Furthermore, Ziehm Imaging GmbH (Germany) entered into an agreement with Sul Imagem (Brazil), to manufacture mobile C-arms in Brazil. This agreement focused on manufacturing the first Ziehm Imaging C-arm Ziehm 8000 BR in the country.

Global Leaders:

GE Healthcare (US), Koninklijke Philips (Netherlands), Siemens (Germany), and Ziehm Imaging (Germany) are the key players in the surgical imaging market. Other players involved in this market are Hologic (US), Shimadzu Corporation (Japan), OrthoScan (US), Medtronic (US), Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (Japan), GENORAY (South Korea), Eurocolumbus (Italy), and Allengers Medical Systems (India).
